TIP is about land use based on an appropriate relationship between people and the environment, economics and the future. Tōtara offers a remarkable opportunity to combine economic and environmental regeneration in Northland.

Commercial viability of regenerating farm-tōtara, managed sustainably using a continuous-cover forestry model to produce high-value timber is being investigated. The availability, quality and characteristics of the trees, logs, sawn lumber and dried timber is being assessed, and will be used to evaluate the opportunity.

​

The project will also recommend a structure for a new industry based on sustainably managed farm-tōtara to deliver on the bottom-line objectives of economic, environmental, social and cultural benefits.

We aim to test a business case for a new regional industry based on this farm-tōtara.
