TŌTARA INDUSTRY PILOT
TIP is determining if there is a business case for a new regional tōtara timber industry. It will evaluate the financial viability and market potential by selling the timber it has harvested.
Market demand and timber performance will be tested by selling dried timber from both stages. The market feedback and analysis of the total production costs will be used to assess the potential for a future tōtara industry.
Any information gaps will be identified for further work.
By the completion of the project we will understand the availability and characteristics of the resource, the supply chain processing and costs. We will have sold some timber and ‘seeded’ the market with a small volume of product.
We will be able to recommend a suitable structure of a future tōtara timber industry for Northland.
