TIP plans to harvest up to 500 m³ of logs (around 370 trees) in several stages, using a single-tree selection system and continuous cover forestry principles. Stage One extracted 75 tōtara trees

(100 m³). Stage Two harvested trees from two other farm locations and processed another 200 m³ of tōtara logs, with the option of another stage to come.

STAGE ONE – 100 m³ OF LOGS

Seventy-five tōtara trees were harvested (100 m³ log volume) from a farm in Kaeo in the Far North in May 2018. The trees were harvested using continuous cover forestry principles. Each tree was selected, considering its form, and the potential impacts on the health and growth potential of the remaining forest and its ecosystem. They were felled in such a way as to avoid the need for any machinery to enter the forest.

STAGE TWO – 200 m³ OF LOGS

Two farm sites around Kawakawa were harvested in April and May 2019. Around 200 m³ of tōtara logs were harvested and milled in Waipu and are currently drying.

We plan to harvest and process more logs in the 2020 season, to test other aspects of the operation and to provide a small but steady supply of the tōtara timber to the market.
